What is km-effort?

UTMB categories (20K, 50K, 100K, 100M) are based on km-effort, an internationally recognised formula for measuring the distance of a trail running race by accounting for both distance and elevation gain, giving a perceived distance.

Km-effort is calculated by adding 1 km to the race distance for every 100 metres of elevation gain. For example, a 50 km race with 2,500 metres of elevation gain has 75 km-effort.

ITRA Endurance points (from 0 to 6) use ITRA's own calculation to estimate a race's endurance difficulty — they serve as proof of experience for registering for particularly demanding races.

UTMB race categories by km-effort: 20K, 50K, 100K and 100M

On Epic Trail, you can leave your own food at the Istán aid station by letting the volunteers know in advance.
